Powerball USA – One of the Major Lotteries
Powerball USA is a multi state game that gives players nine different ways of winning prizes. The minimum advertised jackpot starts at a huge forty million dollars. In addition to the jackpot, players can win second level prizes worth one million dollars, and third level prizes of 50,000 dollars. The game is run by the Multi-State Lottery Association from Des Moines, Iowa, America, and is a non-profit organization.
Powerball USA History
Tickets to the Powerball lottery are sold in 47 different jurisdictions in the United States. The biggest jackpot ever won in the Powerball USA lottery was an immense 590 million dollars, won by a ticket bought in Florida, in 2013. Powerball USA winners may choose to receive their jackpot winnings in cash in one lump sum, or to receive it in 30 graduated installments. Drawings are held every Wednesday and Saturday evenings usually at the Florida Lottery’s studio in Tallahassee, and are televised country wide.
Powerball USA began in 1988 as a multi jurisdictional game known as Lotto America. The name was changed to Powerball in 1992, and the first draw was held a few days later. As Powerball, the lottery was the first game to use two drums in the draw. Using two drums to draw the numbers from allows high jackpot odds, numerous prize levels, and a lower overall chance of winning. This concept has since been adopted by the Mega Millions lottery in the USA, Australia’s Powerball, and Thunderball in the United Kingdom.
In 2009, after New Jersey joined Powerball USA, discussions were held and agreements reached that each USA lottery, Powerball and Mega Millions, were allowed to sell tickets for both games. Also in 2009, an agreement was signed that allowed Powerball USA draws to be streamed online. Before this agreement, the only places that sold both Mega Millions and Powerball USA tickets were retailers who had to straddle the borders of certain states. After most of the other states followed the example of New Jersey, Powerball USA became the second multi jurisdictional lottery game in the United States, together with the Mega Millions lottery, and all draws were carried nationally on television.
Recent Changes in Powerball USA Lottery Format
In October 2015 the format of the Powerball USA lottery changed, and the pool of white balls increased from 59 to 69, while the big Powerball pool decreased from 35 to 26. In theory, this will create more overall winners, but also allow more jackpot rollovers.
The minimum Powerball bet is 2 dollars. Players select five numbers from the set of white balls, and one number from the red balls, and the number chosen from the red balls may be the same as one of the numbers from the white balls. To win a prize, at least three white balls or the red Powerball have to match the draw.
Although players may purchase their tickets in most states, they may only claim a prize in the place where the ticket was bought. Most states have an average age of 18, to play the lottery, but some states have an older age limit. Powerball USA winnings are subject to Federal income tax only, and some states, like Florida, do not have a state income tax.
In 2006, WMS Gaming released slot machines under the Powerball brand name. In New York a few years ago, a lottery scratch card was launched, and this has provided a good source of additional revenue for the jurisdiction.
